A Clancy's surprise
Omg. Perth's newest supergroup 😄, Almost Forever were the first band up tonight. Made up of lead/rhythm from All My Nights, drums from Ber ber Berrn, and bass from Juniper, two of whom are apparently on hiatus (cue Jimmy nail: 'somewhere i hear a door slam'). According to my notes, best drummer that I've come across since starting this whole rocksperth thing. Makes the drums a separate instrument, not just keeping the beat. Said hello to everyone, coz I can see myself getting into this band. My only uncertainty: don't 100% know about the choice of 'Over my Head', it's an awkward sort of number for a pub show. Apart from that, the set rocked - I picked up some occasional riffage that wouldn't be out of place in an AMN song, but the band's sound is all new. Two minute jam to close out the (2nd) last song! 😄 Will see again, keen to watch this space.
Second up were Fifth Odyssey. A good rocking band, but too many covers for the snobs in the room 🤣. I'm trying to decide if I enjoyed the Zep medley - unusual selections definitely helped. Came around a bit and found I really liked em once they got rocking. Keys has a full 88 piece unit "it's too heavy, but you need all of 'em", he says. I nod sagely and agree like someone who knows more than just where middle-c is 🤣). Five piece, had to work to get everyone in shot. Worth seeing again, they'll be good if they grow out of being a semi-cover band.
Third were Lost Valley Hotel. Ridiculously good party band. Lead vox dallies with keys, or guitar at whim, (coz if you can, why not?), also has a really good sense of showmanship. Southpaw on lead. Also, they got sax. Great fun to watch. Would see again. And (unless they've just stepped outside for a bit), the crowd has disappeared with the end of Hotels set.
Three piece band About J, are number four on tonight's lineup. The group became a follow suggestion last week. (Ed (on the night): toCheck), interesting coinkydink. Really like em, these guys know what a guitar solo is. Trio with guitar, bass & drums. Have to watch out for them.
(Ed (during write-up in Mid November): I either saw them a couple weeks before or a couple weeks after. should probably check that, too. Also do blog updates quicker.
"Sfla: need more vox. Only lead vox has voice mic. The others can tell jokes while he's changing guitar - repetitively. Good, but definitely a +10bpm band."
That's all the notes I gave myself for the last band of the night. Surprisingly (or, maybe not), the name of Shrimp For Looking At came to me without having to look it up. They've got sax (as did Lost Valley Hotel - haven't had two sax in one night for ages), but weren't difficult to get into shot. 🤣 I intend to update this, once i've looked at the pics and vids to remind me, but if I don't, my apologies to Shrimp For Looking At (<- that is a really cool, if surreal name) for the godawful review.
