Bris/Perth hip hop at the Bird

Expanding horizons by rocksperth 😄

I missed the welcome to country by Aliwah, but caught all three sets. I have zero notes.

Taija very obviously sings from the heart. She started of a bit timid (I thought), but when she found her voice - POW! I didn't get a songvid - it was difficult to see over the fairly packed crowd and I got the impression that standing on my usual bench was being frowned upon that night. My insta-sized vids are ok, so i've put them up. I can see Taija on the lineup at a mainstream festival set - I wonder if she'd do those sort of gigs. Would see again, though it would most likely be at that sort of show.

Local artist Flewnt was up next. Have loved listening to his Kya Kyana on Noongar Radio for years, it's about time I saw it live. (the video's isn't too bad either.) Really like the rappier stuff this guy does - it's a bit of a pity he'll make most fame & fortune from more mainstream material like Kya Kyana, but being abel to switch genres is only going to serve him well. Would see again.

Say True God was headlining the show. Brisbane mixed race (Indigenous/Polynesian) rapper. Much liked by the crowd, he had everyone jumping and most were singing along. Good interactions and crowd work - he does a very entertaining show even if you don't know the material. Would probably see again if he tours and i notice.

At the end of his set, Say True God called Taija and Flewnt back on stage and this is what followed:

Just for the record. After the hip hop gig, I popped down to a bar tucked behind the Rechabite called Alabama Song to see The Roughhousers. One of the Roughhousers is a Daren Reid & The Soul City Groove staple, and also creator of giglist. Unsung Perth legends rock!
