Cam testing at The Bird - and Lynott's, sorta
Starting at TheBird. Lineup was Skortz, Oosterbanger and The Mackerels. Totally mcT'd Skortz.
Oosterbanger bang! Four piece - all chick - band with keys/bass, lead (on vox) and rhythm and (possibly standing in) drummer who thumps like Janitor's drummer. Ok, so now four of the top five hardest hitting drummers in Perth are chicks. I'm putting AMN in the five. That list is obviously pure opinion and likely doesn't include any drummers from true heavy bands but there you go. Ooohhh, look - Bandcamp. WIll see again.
Mackerels appear to be a grandparent band. Five-piece with lead vox on acoustic, rhythm, bass, chick on keys and drums. Vox sound checking song was 'just a gigolo' (remember this when looking at lead vox in the video), keys at soundcheck could have come from a Hammond organ ad - calling Rimmer... 🤣 I jest though I shouldn't. The music itself was fine, it was just entirely not my style. Of course, knowing Murphy the second I walked out they probably started playing classic rock with 10-minute guitar solos.
I can't remember if the plan had been to go to both venues for the camera test or if I just decided I didn't want to see any more Mackerels, but in any event I ended up wandering down the road to Lynott's Lounge to finish the night.
I saw Getting Dumber, I believe. I didn't get a full song. Colours from stage and spotlights were off and I wasn't 100% sure of the band. They rock hard - throwing in occasional screamy vocals - headbanging all over the place and having a great hard rock time.
Went scrolling through the pics at the end of the night - minor panic ensued. I'm going to have to find a photo app, to add to my video app. All those pics are no good. This attempt at a write-up is appalling and only barely made better because it wasn't about the music tonight (though I will be looking out for that Oosterbanger outfit again). Report card: D+
