Merci, Mercy
I took the trek to Scarbs to see an artist from the Viva La Mojo's set. Jade Rich liked photos, and I offered to take more - then I found out the gig was at the Indy. Hope purple and red photos are ok.
Probably the band with the longest name I've heard of Arianwen and the Silver Pears (OK, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard beats it hands down, but still...) were first on the bill. Very sweet pop, lovely harmonies. Not really my thing. All chicks, except drums. This means: bass, keys and acoustic and vocals, plus backing singer/dual lead vox (whom I'm sure I'm about to see soon again in a funk band called Maple - the prophetic joys of writing reviews waaaay after the event 😁) They can rock - but they don't do it often enough for me. Missed more of the set than I thought I had - I don't think I took a full video.
Next was Jade Rich. So, tryna take pictures, hoping I've got settings right on the new app I've downloaded. Every phone till now has had more games than anything else added to its stock apps. This phone is all about camera apps.
Of course this has nothing to do with the music. I like Jade Rich's stuff. This surprises me coz it's all light and poppy on the surface. Ok, if you look a bit harder some lyrics have a sting in the tail, but it wasn't till i realised that you could throw a rock beat at the material and it would still work. This isn't something I find with most pop. (Georga Raath is another exception.) Going to have a look through bandcamp - for an artist who promotes the service, there is a distinct lack of new material there - to see if other songs sound like 'could-be rock songs' 😁.
The reason for the gig, Merci Mercy was the final act. Suddenly, everything was pink! Not quite as pink as the Rosalie Chilvers gig a few weeks back, and deeper/darker pink, but pink all the same. I'm not sure. She's got attitude. The music is good. But I think it mightn't fall into my new found pop-tolerance of liking stuff that can be turned into rock. I have a feeling she will be massive if she keeps the work up. She absolutely knows how to hold an audience and had the punters singing along at the appropriate moments in her songs. And as I said, the music is good, and she can write a song. However, I don't know if I'd see again, though i wouldn't say no if she was in a big lineup.
