Next gen rockin' the Milk Bar
Got here at 5 for a 4pm start. A couple of young chick rockers are setting up a keys 'n' acoustic combo, there's Halloween costume and gimmickry everywhere, an obvious lecturers/parents and students dichotomy in the room, and I feel more like a fish out of water than I did last night.😁 Still, this makes for a good opportunity to test the new cam app.
Anyhoo, today we have (mcT) Mali Sims, Woeful Willows (kudos for not using 'weeping'), Mellow Drive (seen before, I think) and Lillith (definitely seen before), all presented by North Metro TAFE). I think there are two graduating acts and two that have graduated. Kudos everybody.
Woeful Willows are a two piece acoustic 'n' keys (that were setting up as I walked in). Soulful, deeply personal music. Mix of covers (interesting choices, but they worked) and originals. Very nice harmonies backed up by good music, also good job on naming songs (for ignorant punters like me). Could learn to present more - gotta forget shyness once on stage - when talking between songs. My videos aren't that great. I put it down to trying a new camera app.
Milk Bar has immediately started filling up ready for acts 3 n 4. Punters don't appreciate the gold just waiting to be discovered in favour of stuff they already know about (says the hypocrite that entirely missed the first set 🤣).
Mellow Drive do what they do real well. Mixing decent covers (am I becoming cover-tolerant?), with originals, bopping and grooving with the instrumental breaks - once they go fully original they'll have me. For now they are a great party band - think Thorogood - for a fun night.
Lillith have moved waaay up in my list. I like. They're like a junior version of The Floors. Heavy, umm no, massive rock. (Is that a thing?) Different to heavy. All pervading, much more bass, floor toms a prereq, but not (necessarily) overloud and no screamy vocals. They're too young to do this stuff this good. 😁 Will see more.
