Planet of Sound - Milk(y Way) Bar Friday
Notes are very sparse:
"Saw The Meeck, Codavision and Inkeater
Inkeater lead vox sounded like Lemmy on occasion. Guitarist is v.v. underated. Surprisingly engaged given not my style.
Codavision are a party band. I like I think. Need to doublecheck.
The Meeck are a bit weird. This is good."
I'm going to have to work it out from memory and the videos.
The Meeck were the first band I saw. Trio with (heavy) bass, lead vox/guitar and drums. I like the groovy? funky? sound the bassist gets out of his guitar (from around 2.30 in the vid). They were trying some musical experimentation, as I recall. Keen to involve the crowd, I remember a participation bit, that I think went alright, but seemed to finish quicker and quieter than I'd've expected. Wouldn't mind seeing again. Caught a song, (OK, but there's a lot of red in the light and I should've zoomed into lead vox for the last minute or so) and vaguely remember promising to send it the next day. (I'm writing this in the last two days of July for a gig from the 11th.)
The second band was Codavision. They have a fanbase and are well-liked (and known, judging by the passing of the mic for 'guest' lyrics) mid song. Bassist is insanely good - if I was more brutal I might suggest they're punching above their weight having him in the band - and was given a deserved shout-out during the intro. Weezer et al influences. They've got a new EP 'Activated' I wasn't aware of and will have to look into. V. short 'n' snappy video sums them up nicely (watch the bass).
Happy to see again, but not entirely my thing.
Final band of the night was Inkeater. I wondered at the name, then lead vox took his shirt off. Heavier, speedier unit than I'd normally watch, they inspired some rowdy-dancing (mosh without a pit) at the front of the dancefloor and put on a very good show. Vocalist (with ink) who sometimes sounds like Lemmy is a character. Also have a really good, underrated guitarist. There was a band member who's job (unless I missed something) was just to headbang. One of the moshing dancers who must've been known to the band was called up and played some guitar like he'd been in the band all his life. I don't seem to have a full song video, oddly. A li'l thrashy for my tastes - probably not likely to see again unless in a big lineup, but still great fun.
