Punk - the sequel - at the four5nine

Dec. 5, 2025

A couple of gigs grabbed my attention, and this one had the most bands I didn't know

I wanted to see Janitor again to get better video - hopefully not all in red - so of course you can guess which band was playing when I arrived halfway through their set. They appear to have a new drummer, and didn't quite have the togetherness from last time I saw them. I think they knew it too. I've seen Town Bike once say, 'come back next time, we'll be better'. The sense I got from this gig was 'come back next time coz we're usually better'.

First full set I saw was from Pontianak. Never ever heard of this 5-piece with guitars (headless l, 5-string b, r) everywhere, drums and chick on vox. They pack a punch and they've got something to say. It's a hard rocking punk style and vox' delivery suits the music well. Beset with technical issues, but managed to power through. I spent too much time trying to deal with lighting colours to pay proper attention to lyrics, but caught enough to know I will see again (Ed: sooner than you think).

Band closing out the set, and local punk rock fan favourites were Chub Rub. (Is it just me or are Perth bands by default either named after local landmarks (Devon Street, Shorehaven, The Omaha Court) or ummm, naughty things (Post Nut Clarity, Nylon Stroke, Chub Rub)? But I digress.)
Chub Rub are hard, and in your face - shirtlessly. 😁 Possibly a li'l over the top for my tastes - maybe if I saw them in a slightly tamer format, maybe if I was closer (four5nine was going off while Chub Rub were playing and it's such a tiny space) I'd get it. So that's a PoV from the back of the crowd. Will see again to learn more, there's obvious talent, and lead vox has top crowd-wrangling skills, so I'm thinking it's likely the reviewer that's wrong. 🤣
