Vicenaria: some Pretty Ugly Mojo

March 7, 2025

Blush and The Spunloves support the Pretty Ugly's during their Vicenaria album launch at Mojo's in Fremantle

Made the first set, but only just in time to record the last song. Blush - who I've never heard of and proved quite difficult to find in socials - know how to rock. A four-piece consisting of three women on bass, vocals/rhythm and drums and the obligatory token male on lead. Is this becoming a (good) thing? (hi Flora Road). Spoke to bass guitarist's mum (the 'rents came down for support), the family that rocks together, stays together! Will watch out for this group. It seems I will be catching them next week as they are helping fill in for the sudden (hopefully ending soon) withdrawal by Foothead at four5nine.

The Spunloves are a guitar-driven, melodic rock band and they are (reads notes) fucking good! They create a wall of sound effect from guitar on guitar. They played a lot of new stuff in their set and were very thankful for us putting up with it all and being expected to listen to it?! The drummer owns those drums. Not a smasher, but sat above the drum kit like its overlord. The bass player was barefoot!

There was a boogie-infused song ("good clean fun") where in the middle it just changed beat and went rockabilly. Def want to see again. These guys know what they're doing.

They finished their set with a jam. :-D

I'm guessing the name in the vid's title. It might be called The Long Way Round. I hope it's not called All Right Now.

Pretty Ugly's finished the night. A long set and really, really good. I wasn't going to do video, because it does seem they have it (more professionally) covered, but did anyway :-D.

OMG the bass guitarist. Channelling John Entwhistle like nobody's business. Not at all surprised to see him step in to lead guitar position for song in the middle of the set (the recording below).

The night was about promoting the new album Vicenaria - so of course, now I have a copy of Vicenaria.

I wasn't going to be here tonight, Lynott's was my original destination. But then I found out Transperth can't even be bothered putting trains on for the measley 5 stations from Perth to Vic Park at the moment (1-15/3/25). I guess they figure nobody's been on a train between Armadale and Vic Park for the last two years so a bit more pain and injury won't hurt 'em. Gonna have to work out how/where to park in Perth on friday and saturday nights since I can't rely on the state public transit authority. Not all gigs are held in Freo and Maylands (more's the pity).

Top night. Big Kudos to Mojo's for keeping the scene alive!
