WAM - Multi-Gig Showcase
First set I saw was from Fremant, err, Walyalup indigenous led Boox Kid, a four-piece with lead vox and acoustic, plus guitarist and funky electric violin/fiddle. Soulful, personal rock - good music, but more suited to headphones on the lounge, rather than banging, sweaty nights at a rock gig (xref: Volcanics). Would see again especially (but not necessarily) at a relaxing Sunday sesh gig - say at Viva La Mojo's next month, he predicted.
Next stop - down to Rechabite Hall to see Coco Elise, who is not a solo chick rocker as I thought 😳, but a 5-piece including keys and a flute! (Bands I've seen with flautists: 3). Fusing, dreamy, synthy, flutey tunes with a rock foundation, the music is highly listenable, even if it could use +10bpm (imho). A bit like Boox Kid above, music that works better with headphones in a quiet room, compared to rocking out with a bouncing crowd. Their last song was a bit rockier, and half way through Kayps stepped out for an impromputu rap collab with the band. My first hip hop videography - look at me branching out! 🤣 Speaking of video, I'm pretty sure I did the initial focus thing in the vid below on purpose.
Gloam at Lynott's! OK, the headphones are off. Gloam do the classic rock stuff and they do it good. Three guitars, and drums. Solos, drums, guitars everywhere. Smiling rocksperth! Will see again, may even look out for them.
Back to The Bird to see People Taking Pictures, a fusion of indie-punk with a sort of calypso reggae vibe. A lot of guitars, a lot of keyboards, dual vox, there's an understated drummer in back somewhere. It's all very busy, but it works. I got vinyl :-D
Last set of the night was Great Gable back at the Rechabite. Four piece - 2 guitars plus a leonine bassist and drums - sometimes simple just works.
Not the best review I've done. Why do I have no notes? Why did I not turn up till 9.30? I do not know the anwer to these things.
I know RocksPerth should probably look into WAM membership.
